An antique aneroid Colonel Goulier pocket barometer & altimeter by Jules Richard of Paris. This is a rare and fine instrument circa 1880 from a very prestigious French maker. It is in full working order and contained in its protective leather case with its original instruction leaflet included.
The barometer has a diameter of 5.5 cm (2 1/8″) & a thickness of 1.7 cm (11/16″). The dial is silvered with fine black lettering. The dial bears the engraved signature ‘Jules Richard, Paris’, “46371′ and ‘ the trademark sign ‘rf’ within a circle. it is also engraved ‘Barometre Altimetrique du Colonel Goulier, Compense’. It has a fine blued steel pointer. The lower half of the dial has a little discolouration which could easily be cleaned off. There are two scales on the dial: the inner ring reads from 64 to 80 registering the atmospheric pressure in cm with an inside band reading from 57 to 63 cm. the outer ring reads from 0 to 1.9 registering the altitude above sea level in km. The front bezel rotates by turning the stem winder to adjust the altitude scale. The instrument has a polished chrome or nickel plated. Pocket watch shaped case in very good condition. There is a small hole on the reverse side to access the adjusting screw to enable the barometer to be calibrated. This is a very solid, quite heavy serious scientific instrument designed by Col Goulier. The full size protective outer case is exceptionally well covered in leather in almost mint condition, even the opening button is still covered in leather.
